As w1nNyYy suggested, I am opening a discussion in this forum.
Did any of the forum users read a book written in english?
The most beautiful experience was to read a book that I think is a modern classic: Neuromancer by William Gibson. I read it both in italian and in english and I have to say that the italian translation could not recreate the atmosphere of the original text. I also found a "hidden treasure", on a shelf in a bookstore of Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates: it's The Black Magician trilogy, by Trudi Canavan, a wonderful adventure (about which I already spoke, in another section of the forum) starring a poor girl in a world where kings are supported by a powerful guild of magicians. I never found this trilogy in Italy, so it has been a surprise for me.
Other books that I read in their original language were some of the stories written by H.G. Wells, such as The Time Machine and various books by Rex Stout, the creator of Nero Wolfe .

The books that I cited were the ones that I already read! hate-embarassed

After all, I am a software developer, so I am quite confident with written english... it's true, however, that reading a technical article is simpler than reading a novel.
If you like poetry, you could try to read the Spoon River Anthology, by the american writer Edgar Lee Masters, which was the base for Fabrizio De André's "Non al denaro, non all'amore nè al cielo". And, if you don't suffer from nightmares hate-wink, the exciting, obscure, but yet wonderful poem The rime of the ancient mariner, by Samuel Taylor Coleridge: a true masterpiece in english literature. I was amazed to discover, years after having read it, that the Iron Maiden wrote a song based on it!

Hear the Rime of the Ancient Mariner,
see his eyes as he stops one of three,
mesmerizes one of the wedding guests:
"STAY HERE AND LISTEN TO THE NIGHTMARES OF THE SEA"

hate-cool

hate-lookaround unfortunatly, I had to study that poem during my english lessons at school... I hated it! In my opinio it was orrible and boring, sad and pessimistic... and now I'm truly amazed reading that you bought it on our own in order to read it!!!
My sincere compliments! hate-wink
Even if there were some old english poetry that I liked reading in english (shakespeare for example), actually I read only fiction books, for example the last book that i've read was "The Da vinci code"...

I never red any book in english, mainly beacuse I'm so lazy to read also italian books (the last one I red it was more tha 5 years ago).
What can I do if after only 3 pages I star sleepeng ?!! :)

I remember that one time I was working in england and to exercise my english I bought "the godfather", I red only 2 pages and after I left it in the casket close with my bed.

I prefer to read newspapers or reviews when I'm travelling abroad.

Amazun, and what about movies?

Mandarina, maybe the problem is that school tends to introduce concepts and authors in a way that is counterproductive. For example I always found Manzoni the worst italian author. Maybe I would not hate him so much if I didn't study "I Promessi Sposi" at school and would have read it on my own, instead.

I have just arrived from my usual Christmas holiday in the U.A.E., where I bought the usual bunch of books hate-wink.

First of all, I bought another book by Trudi Canavan: "Priestess of the white", which is the story of an High Priestess (woman priest) who has been chosen by the gods to guide their people.

Other books are: the second and the third volume of the Tarot Trilogy by Piers Anthony (I read in italian the first book, the other have not been translated), a collection of all the works of Oscar Wilde, a novel by Arthur C. Clarke ("The hammer of God") and a book about Vedic Mathematic principles.

A special mention goes to a very famous book which is more actual than ever: the Gerge Orwell's masterpiece "Nineteen eighty-four" (1984). This book was written against the Stalin's dictatorship but the principles are valid also for our so-called democracy! I also decided to put the Party's motto as my new signature!

My favourite book...It is fantastic, is one of the highest expression of freedom in literature...I love it...I red the italian edition, but it remains a fantastic book...

Hi green lizard,
I learnt that you use to go to U.A.E for your Christmas holyday.
I§'ve been in U.A.E. about 5 times for business.
It's one of the best place I like to visit.
Usually I stay in the Hotel in Sharjah (about 20 min to Dubai), but I use to move both in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
The hotel where I go the last times is the Millennium hotel in Sharjah, but in previus times I've been also in the Dubai Marine hotel in Dubai and Rainaissance hotel in Sharjah.
What about you ? :)

Hi, I always stay at the Hilton Baynunah in Abu Dhabi (on the Corniche Road), since my father lives there.
I visited Dubai many times, sleeping in the Palm Hotel near the Hard Rock Café or at a friend's home.
I went to Sharjah only once, to visit the Modern Art Museum.
